Actif Epica is a non-profit event put on by people who have a simple passion for cycling, running, adventure, and outdoor activity. We rely on a core Race Committee, a number of additional key volunteers (e.g. trail and race day committee members), the Crow Wing Trail Association, and a small army of general volunteers who help with things like staffing our various race route Check Points and sweeping the course.

Without these volunteers Actif Epica would simply not exist. If you’d like to help us by volunteering yourself please head over to the volunteer page for more info.

Our Race Committee

Scott Wiebe

Scott has a background as a non-profit administrator and events director and as a collegiate runner. He’s also a certified fitness trainer and has a life long passion for cycling.

After years of volunteering for local events and later directing races, from relatively small, local cyclocross weekends to a World Junior Qualifier triathlon, Scott became involved with Actif Epica in its inaugural year as a Check Point volunteer with his wife Deanna. He’s slowly assumed more of a leadership role as a part of the Race Committee and now in his 4rd year on the committee he looks forward to continue helping build on a great foundation.

Deanna Wiebe

Deanna has a successful background in Provincial team sports and as a cyclocross champ in its early local years, and she can probably bench press more than you. Her professional background is as a biochemist and she’s currently Director of Quality Control for a biopharmaceutical company that specializes in addressing emerging natural and man-made biological and chemical public health threats.

Deanna has partnered with her husband Scott for years in helping bring athletic events large and small to the local community and has been involved with Actif Epica from the beginning. Now in her 4rd year on the Race Committee she’s excited to practice a different type of quality control and to continue our annual tradition of Celebrating Human Resilience.

Dan Lockery

Dan not only has tons of race experience, he has tons of race win experience. As a winner  of our own event and member of the prestigious Triple Crown club, having also done well in Tuscobia and Arrowhead, he’s an incredible asset on the Race Committee because he can really see things from a competitive perspective.

When he’s not putting in long miles on the bike and/or recon’ing our course he’s working on the less glamorous behind the scenes details to help make the next Actif Epica the best one yet.

Murielle Bugera, photo by La Liberte

Murielle is the President of the Crow Wing Trail Association. She was instrumental in bringing six municipalities together to identify and develop a route that was subsequently registered as the Trans Canada Trail from Winnipeg to Emerson. The route is based on a historical ox-cart trail used in the mid 1800’s to transport goods from the Red River Settlement to St. Paul, Minnesota. The Association is responsible for the trail’s maintenance and promotes its use through its valuable partners, such as Actif Epica.

Murielle lives on her family’s farm on the Crow Wing Trail north of St-Pierre-Jolys. Her twenty years with Manitoba Crop Insurance resulted in trusted relationships with landowners, which was crucial in the development of the Crow Wing Trail. She continues to be a volunteer on several committees, providing continuity to much of the work she once initiated as the Economic Development Officer in the area.
