When Green Action Centre was approached to organise a co-event to Actif Epica, we were excited by the opportunity. We run the Manitoba Commuter Challenge, and had been keen to hold a winter event for quite some time. A celebration of winter is right up our alley!
Realizing that not all of us are up to the challenge of a 130 km winter bike ride, we envisioned an event wherein people could participate in teams of 1 to 5 to complete that 130 km over the space of the week leading up to Actif Epica, using any form of self-propelled winter activity. And, thus, Bougeons en hiver: The Jack Frost Challenge! was born.
Here at Green Action Centre, some of us will complete the 130 km on our own just by logging our daily cycle commutes. Others will just barely scrape the 130 km in a team of 5. We have a family that isn’t sure they’ll make the full 130 km but will have fun trying. One Green Action staff member is going to use this as impetus to try winter cycling for the first time. Others will take the bus part way then walk the rest.
Our tracking tool will allow you to log your kilometres, so you can see your progress and keep inspired!
We’ve been thrilled to see the enthusiasm, and the partnerships forming.
We’re really happy to be partnering with the communities of St. Malo, St. Pierre-Jolys, Otterburne, Niverville, and St. Adolphe, and looking forward to seeing lots of teams participating from these Actif Epica host communities.
We invite you to register and join us to skate, bike, ski, snowshoe or walk a combined total of 130 km during the week of February 11_17.
Really, just having an excuse to get out there and enjoy Manitoba winter is enough motivation, but if you need more, participants will be entered in a draw to win ‘cool’ prizes!
Green Action Centre will also be at Festival Des Amis in St. Malo on Race Day (February 18th). We hope you’ll drop by and say hello!
